Dempster Street Pier
The Time Traveler's WifeDempster Street Pier is where a search for Henry DeTamble’s body becomes an unexpected reunion. At five o’clock on a hot, overcast morning, Clare Abshire waits among emergency crews and reporters, holding Henry’s clothes; then Henry rises from Lake Michigan and swims back to the pier, alive but cold and tired. The scene makes the pier a threshold between apparent death and Henry’s sudden return, while exposing a private crisis to a crowd of strangers.
Setting and Search
Clare stands on the pier as police divers search Lake Michigan. The response is extensive: five fire engines, three ambulances, seven squad cars, seventeen firemen, six paramedics, and fifteen police officers, including one policewoman. Twenty-one reporters have gathered, alongside an elderly couple watching from the edges. Clare’s precise tally of the people and vehicles gives the scene the quality of an inventory made while she tries not to confront what may have happened.
The search follows a report that Henry jumped from the end of the pier, visible in a police car’s searchlight. Clare is left holding his clothes while the authorities look for his body. Captain Michels approaches and asks whether Henry might have wanted to take his own life, turning the search into an inquiry about his intentions as well as his whereabouts.
Henry’s Return
Clare denies that Henry meant to kill himself and offers the explanation that he may simply have gone swimming without waking her. Asked whether he left a note, she says no. The account is not convincing even to her, but before she can produce a more plausible explanation, she hears a splash near shore and spots Henry in the water.
Henry begins to stand, hears Clare call out, ducks beneath the surface again, and swims to the pier. Clare kneels down to tell him that the police thought he had drowned and had been searching for two hours. Henry looks worried, yet also amused by the commotion. The officers cluster around Clare and peer down at him; Captain Michels then asks Henry to identify himself.
Narrative Significance
The pier scene turns on the gap between what the witnesses believe and what has happened: the police treat Henry’s disappearance as a likely drowning or suicide, while Clare knows only that he has vanished and must improvise an explanation. His return resolves the immediate search but not the officers’ questions. By placing Clare’s intimate uncertainty amid flashing lights, emergency crews, and a press gathering, the scene makes Henry’s unexplained absences visible as a public emergency as well as a private strain.
